2023-10-12: Workshop on Accessibility in Open Source Software

  • Join us for a Workshop on Accessibility in Open Source Software!  With a new emphasis on cognitive needs in addition to physical disabilities, software designers are rethinking what it means to develop accessible software. There is no one way to be completely accessible for all users; different categories of disabilities require different–and sometimes opposing–solutions. We will begin with a tour of the different kinds of assistive technologies and devices used by people with vision, hearing, mobility, and cognitive disabilities and discuss how these devices affect the way people interact with web-based applications in general and ILS components in particular. We will review the recommended accessible design patterns for each major category of disabilities and discuss how these apply to library systems. Come learn how libraries, consortia, and open source communities can build more accessible open source library software to support the specific needs of library workers and library patrons.
  • Note: Space in this Workshop is limited to 30 attendees.
